More D.I.Y Painting Tips

Following on from my last DIY Painting Tips Blog here are some additional D.I.Y painting tips to take your project to the next level:

1) Dealing with Texture

Textured Walls: Use a thicker nap roller for textured surfaces to ensure the paint covers all crevices. For particularly rough textures, consider using a paint sprayer.

Stippled Ceilings: If you're painting a stippled (popcorn) ceiling, use a large-nap roller and be prepared to apply more than one coat.

2) Using a Paint Sprayer

Considerations: If you’re painting a large area or a textured surface, a paint sprayer can save time and provide a smooth finish. Practice on a cardboard surface first to adjust your technique.

Protect Everything: Cover everything you don’t want to paint with plastic sheeting or drop cloths when using a sprayer, as the fine mist can drift.

3) Painting Tricks for Difficult Areas

Behind Toilets or Radiators: Use a small roller with a long handle or a specialty paint brush with a flexible handle to reach tight spots.

Corners and Edges: When painting corners, apply paint with a brush in the corner first, then blend it out with a roller to avoid thick lines of paint in the corner.

4) Avoiding Common Mistakes -

Don’t Overload the Brush/Roller: Too much paint on your brush or roller can cause drips and uneven coverage. Dip just the tip of the brush or load the roller lightly and roll off excess.

Avoid Painting in Humidity: High humidity can cause paint to dry slowly and may lead to issues with finish quality. Try to paint on days with moderate weather conditions.

5) Advanced Finishing Techniques

Faux Finishes: Explore techniques like colour washing, sponging, or rag rolling for textured finishes. Practice on a sample board before applying to walls.

Stripes or Patterns: For stripes, use a laser level to ensure straight lines. Apply tape carefully, and remove it while the paint is still slightly wet to prevent peeling.

6) Maintaining Your Tools

Cleaning Brushes and Rollers: After painting, clean your brushes and rollers thoroughly. For latex paints, use warm water and mild soap. For oil-based paints, use the appropriate solvent.

Storing Brushes: Wrap wet brushes and rollers in plastic wrap or aluminium foil if you need to take a break. This will keep them from drying out.

7) Safety Considerations

Ventilation: Always ensure proper ventilation when painting, especially when using oil-based paints or strong primers.

Ladders: Use a sturdy ladder and ensure it’s placed on a stable surface. Never overreach while on a ladder.

Personal Protection: Wear safety glasses, gloves, and a mask, especially when sanding, spraying paint, or working with strong fumes.

8) Post-Painting Tips

Check for Touch-Ups: Once the paint has dried, check for areas that may need a second coat or touch-ups.

Curing Time: Allow the paint to cure for a few days before hanging anything on the walls or washing them.

9) Consider the Room’s Function

High-Traffic Areas: For hallways or kitchens, consider using a more durable paint finish like semi-gloss or satin, which is easier to clean.

Accents and Features: Consider painting accent walls or features in a contrasting colour to add visual interest to the room.

10) Upcycling and Creativity

Furniture: Consider painting furniture pieces to match or complement your newly painted room. Properly sand, prime, and use a durable paint designed for furniture.

Wall Art: Create your own art by using leftover paint on canvases, adding a personal touch that matches your decor. By applying these advanced tips and techniques, you can handle more complex painting projects and achieve even more impressive results.
